Ex-militants surrender weapons to Army in Rivers for destruction
THE Nigerian Army in conjunction with Rivers State Amnesty Committee has commenced the destruction of arms and ammunition surrendered by repentant militants and cutists in the state.
Spokesman of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Aminu Ilyasu, disclosed this in a statement, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, saying that the destruction was taking place at Igwurita shooting range between 6a.m. and 5p.m.
He said that the exercise which started, yesterday, will end on Friday, adding that residents around the area where the destruction is ongoing should not panic at the sound of explosions.
“The authorities of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, wish to inform the general public and in particular residents, commuters and farmers within the two locations not to panic on hearing the sound of the explosions as they are controlled by experts,” he said.
It will be recalled that a huge catche of arms was surrendered by militants who embraced the amnesty programme proclaimed by the state government for repentant militants and cultists last year.
